The Pier Shopping Centre (originally named The Pier Marketplace), first opened its doors to the public on the 28th of November 1989.

As part of the 30th Anniversary commemorations, a Time Capsule was filled by Pier tenants with nostalgic memorabilia and present-day souvenirs, set and sealed air-tight in readiness to be buried.

Cairns residents were also invited to take part in the celebrations, and over recent weeks sent in letters, photos, video footage and memorabilia to place inside the capsule. These will be shared with their intended loved ones when the capsule is lifted on the Pier’s Diamond Anniversary in the year 2039.

You’re Invited

You are invited to witness the Time Capsule as it is lowered into place, and capped with a cast bronze plaque. Come along and celebrate this milestone, as we round of 2019 and usher in a new decade!
